Search has changed. Your visibility strategy needs to catch up.

AI-powered search engines don't return ten blue links. They return one synthesized answer. AEO and GEO are how you make sure that answer includes your business.

When AI answers the question, will your business be the source?

Search behavior is shifting faster than most businesses realize. Gartner projects that traditional search engine volume will drop meaningfully as conversational AI assistants handle a growing share of routine queries. A growing portion of searches now bypass traditional results entirely, answered directly by AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews. These engines don't rank ten results and let the user choose. They synthesize an answer from sources they've determined to be authoritative, accurate, and well-structured. If your content isn't built to be retrieved and cited by those engines, you don't exist in their answers.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are the disciplines that change that. AEO focuses on getting your content surfaced in answer engines like Perplexity and Gemini, platforms built to directly answer questions. GEO focuses on getting your content retrieved and cited by generative AI systems like ChatGPT and SearchGPT when they synthesize responses using live retrieval pipelines (RAG, or Retrieval-Augmented Generation). Both require a content foundation that's accurate, structured, and machine-readable. That starts with schema implementation, and it starts with getting the underlying content right first.

How It Works

From your content to an AI-generated answer

AI search engines don't crawl and rank the way Google does. They retrieve structured, entity-rich content through live RAG pipelines and synthesize it into answers. Here's how the path from your content to an AI citation actually works.

Client Data & Content Layer Your website content, structured data, and entity information
Structured Entity Schema Markup JSON-LD schema that makes your content machine-readable and retrievable via RAG pipelines

What is AEO & GEO?

Most people have heard the terms. Few know what they actually mean.

Here's what AEO and GEO are, why they're different from traditional SEO, and why they matter for your business right now.

AEO

Answer Engine Optimization

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your content so it gets surfaced and cited by platforms specifically built to answer questions directly, without the user needing to click through to a website. When someone asks Perplexity "what's the best approach to X" or Google surfaces an AI Overview above the search results, the content cited there didn't get there by accident. It was structured, entity-rich, and machine-readable enough for the engine to trust it as an authoritative source.

GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of getting your content retrieved and incorporated by large language model-based systems when they generate synthesized responses. These systems use RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), a live retrieval layer that dynamically pulls current web content to supplement their training data when composing answers. Getting into those answers requires content that's authoritative, consistently accurate, and semantically well-structured across your entire digital footprint.

Our Approach

What you can expect from our AEO & GEO work

Our AEO/GEO engagements are modular and often integrated with existing SEO work. A comprehensive engagement can include:

Foundation & Audit

01

AEO/GEO Content Audit

Before we implement a single line of schema, we audit your existing content for AI retrieval readiness, including how well it aligns with RAG pipeline retrieval criteria. Content that's vague, poorly structured, or lacking entity clarity won't get surfaced by AI engines regardless of how well it's marked up. The audit identifies what's ready, what needs improvement, and what needs to be created before technical implementation begins.

02

Entity & Topic Mapping

AI engines organize knowledge around entities (people, places, organizations, concepts) not just keywords. We map your brand, products, services, and subject matter expertise as defined entities with clear relationships. This includes optimizing your digital footprint for semantic vector alignment and entity co-occurrence, making sure your brand is consistently grouped with the terms, topics, and trusted entities that signal authority and relevance in your category across the broader web.

03

Keyword & Question Intent Research

AEO content is built around the specific questions your audience is asking, not just search terms. We research the exact queries AI engines are being asked in your category, identify the answer patterns they prefer, and map that intent to content your site should own.

04

Competitive AI Visibility Analysis

We assess which competitors are currently being cited in AI-generated answers in your category: what content they're producing, how it's structured, and why the AI engines are choosing them. This informs both your content strategy and your schema implementation priorities.

Implementation & Optimization

05

Schema Markup Implementation

Structured data implementation across all applicable page types: FAQ, Article, HowTo, LocalBusiness, Product, Organization, BreadcrumbList, and more. Beyond the standard types, we identify and implement industry-specific schema relevant to your vertical, since healthcare, legal, financial services, and others each have schema types that standard implementations miss. All implemented as JSON-LD against Schema.org specifications.

06

AEO Content Development

FAQ pages, entity-rich articles, structured answer content, and topical authority pieces written specifically to match the answer patterns AI engines prefer: clear question framing, direct answers, supporting context, and entity-rich language throughout. Content built to be retrieved via RAG pipelines, not just read by humans.

07

Technical Markup Validation & AI Bot Governance

Every schema implementation is validated against Google's Rich Results Test and Schema.org validator before and after deployment, so errors are caught and corrected before they silently suppress your AI visibility. We also conduct an AI crawler audit, reviewing your robots.txt configuration to make sure the right AI bots (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and others) have appropriate access to your content while protecting proprietary or sensitive assets from unwanted crawling. Getting this balance right is increasingly important as AI crawlers become more aggressive.

08

Ongoing Optimization & Reporting

AEO and GEO are evolving disciplines, and AI engine behaviors change as models update. We monitor performance using traditional SEO metrics (organic traffic, impressions, click-through rates, featured snippet capture) and adjust content and schema as the landscape evolves. AI-specific citation tracking is an emerging capability we continue to develop as reliable tooling matures.

AEO vs. GEO

Two disciplines. One goal. Getting your content cited by AI.

AEO and GEO target different AI search behaviors. Understanding the distinction clarifies why both matter, and why optimizing for one without the other leaves visibility on the table.

AEO

Answer Engine Optimization

Optimizes your content to be surfaced and cited by platforms specifically built to answer questions directly: Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews. These engines retrieve structured content and present it as a direct answer, often without the user clicking through to a source. Being cited here requires content that's accurate, clearly structured, and entity-rich enough for the engine to trust as a source.

GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

Optimizes your content to be retrieved via RAG pipelines and incorporated by large language model-based systems when they generate synthesized responses: ChatGPT, SearchGPT, Microsoft Copilot. These systems dynamically pull live web content to compose answers. Getting into those answers requires content that's authoritative, well-structured, and semantically consistent across your entire digital footprint.

Schema Implementation

Structured data is how AI engines read your content. We speak their language.

Schema markup is the technical layer that makes your content machine-readable, telling AI engines not just what your page says but what it means. It's the bridge between your content and the RAG retrieval pipelines that power modern AI search. We implement the full range of Schema.org types applicable to your business, plus industry-specific schema for regulated verticals. Every implementation is written as JSON-LD, validated against testing tools, and deployed correctly the first time. Schema that's implemented incorrectly is worse than no schema, because it actively confuses the engines you're trying to impress.

The Process

How we approach an AEO & GEO engagement

  1. 01

Content Audit & AI Readiness Assessment

We start by evaluating your existing content against AI retrieval criteria: entity clarity, answer structure, topical authority, content accuracy, and RAG pipeline compatibility. Schema implementation on poor content is wasted effort. The audit tells us what's ready, what needs work, and what doesn't exist yet before we touch any technical implementation.

  2. 02

    Entity Mapping & Question Research

Your brand, products, services, and expertise mapped as defined entities with semantic vector alignment in mind. Question intent research conducted to identify the specific queries AI engines are being asked in your category and the answer patterns they prefer. Entity co-occurrence signals across your digital footprint assessed and improved.

  3. 03

Schema Implementation & AI Bot Governance

JSON-LD structured data implemented across applicable page types: universal schema types first, then content-specific and industry-specific types. robots.txt audited and configured for optimal AI crawler access, allowing GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and other beneficial crawlers while protecting sensitive or proprietary assets. Every schema implementation validated before deployment.

  4. 04

    Content Development

AEO-optimized content produced where the audit identified gaps: FAQ pages, entity-rich articles, direct answer content, and topical authority pieces structured for RAG retrieval. Written to match the answer patterns AI engines select as sources.

  5. 05

    Validation & Quality Assurance

All schema implementations tested against Google's Rich Results Test and Schema.org validator. Errors identified and resolved. Structured data confirmed error-free. AI bot access verified against robots.txt configuration before the engagement closes out.

  6. 06

    Monitoring & Iteration

Ongoing performance monitored via traditional SEO metrics: organic traffic, impressions, featured snippet capture, and click-through rates. Content and schema updated as AI engine behaviors evolve. AEO and GEO are not set-and-forget, and the discipline continues to mature, as does our approach to it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between SEO and AEO/GEO?

Traditional SEO optimizes for ranked search results, the ten blue links that appear when someone searches on Google or Bing. AEO and GEO optimize for AI-generated answers, the synthesized responses that appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews. The technical foundations overlap significantly (content quality, structured data, authority signals) but the optimization targets are meaningfully different. See SEO

What is RAG and why does it matter for AEO/GEO?

RAG stands for Retrieval-Augmented Generation, the architecture that allows AI systems like ChatGPT and SearchGPT to dynamically pull live web content when composing answers rather than relying solely on their static training data. When someone asks ChatGPT a question today, it often retrieves current web pages in real time to supplement its response. Optimizing for RAG pipelines means structuring your content so those retrieval systems can find it, parse it, and trust it as a source, which is why schema markup and content structure matter so much.

Why does content quality have to come before schema implementation?

Schema markup tells AI engines what your content means, but it can't make bad content good. If your pages are vague, poorly structured, or lacking clear entity definitions, implementing schema on top of them won't get you cited. It might actually confuse the engines you're trying to impress. We audit content quality first because schema on a solid content foundation produces results, while schema on weak content produces nothing.

Which AI platforms do you optimize for?

All major AI search platforms: ChatGPT and SearchGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini and AI Overviews, and Microsoft Copilot. Each platform has different retrieval behaviors and preferences, which is why a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work. We optimize for the full AI search ecosystem, not just one engine.

What schema types do you implement?

The full range of Schema.org types applicable to your business: Organization, FAQ, Article, HowTo, LocalBusiness, Product, BreadcrumbList, and more. Beyond the universal types, we identify and implement industry-specific schema for your vertical. Healthcare, legal, and financial services each have schema types that standard implementations miss, and getting those right is often where the real competitive advantage lives.

What is AI bot governance and why does it matter?

AI crawlers like GPTBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot (Anthropic) regularly crawl websites to build their knowledge bases and retrieval indexes. Your robots.txt file controls which of these crawlers can access which parts of your site. Getting this wrong in either direction costs you: blocking crawlers you want means you don't get cited, and allowing crawlers you don't want means proprietary content gets scraped. We audit and configure your crawler access as part of every AEO/GEO engagement.

Can AEO/GEO be integrated with our existing SEO engagement?

Yes, and it usually produces better results when it is. The content and authority foundations that drive traditional SEO rankings also drive AI search retrieval. Where budget allows, we integrate AEO/GEO work into existing SEO engagements rather than running them as parallel workstreams. In some cases a client's situation doesn't call for it, and we'll tell you honestly if that's the case.

How do you measure AEO/GEO success?

Primarily through traditional SEO metrics (organic traffic, impressions, featured snippet capture, and click-through rates) which provide reliable proxies for AI search visibility improvements. Dedicated AI citation tracking tools are an emerging category that we continue to evaluate as reliable tooling matures. We're transparent about what we can and can't measure reliably rather than reporting on metrics that aren't yet trustworthy.
