Digital Strategy

Know your audience. Know your opportunity.

Discovery and audience research is where every smart digital engagement begins. It's about understanding who you're talking to, where they are, and what they need before a single recommendation gets made.

You can't build for an audience you don't understand.

Most digital projects fail not because of poor execution but because of poor assumptions: assumptions about who the audience is, what they care about, how they behave online, and what will move them to act. Discovery and audience research replaces those assumptions with evidence, pulling from existing analytics, market data, and behavioral research to build a clear, accurate picture of who you're actually talking to and what they need from you.

This is the foundational phase of every Digital Strategy engagement. The findings don't just inform the strategy document, they inform every downstream decision about content, channels, design, and messaging. Get this right, and everything that follows is more focused, more efficient, and more likely to produce results worth measuring.

Our Approach

What you can expect from our discovery & audience research

Our discovery engagements are modular, designed to scale to your exact needs. A comprehensive engagement can include:

Insights & Data

01

Organizational Benchmarking

A structured review of comparable organizations in your space, identifying best practices, common user experience patterns, and opportunities for differentiation. We look at what the bar is for organizations serving similar audiences, so your digital presence clears it.

02

Historical Site & Analytics Review

We pull and analyze your existing GA4, Search Console, and social analytics data directly where we have access, and work from client-provided exports where we don't. High-value pages, top traffic sources, drop-off points, and key conversion paths are mapped and factored into every recommendation that follows.

03

Audience Persona Development

Deep-dive persona development grounded in analytics data, market research, and behavioral mapping. Each persona documents motivations, friction points, digital behavior patterns, and decision-making triggers, giving every downstream recommendation a real human being to write toward.

04

Behavior Mapping

Audience segments mapped across behavioral axes, from active to passive and traditional to digital, to understand how different personas engage with your brand and where they sit in their decision journey. This shapes what you say, where you say it, and how urgently you need to say it.

Strategic Frameworks

05

Customer Journey Mapping

The emotional and behavioral journey of your key personas mapped across every phase, from first awareness through conversion and beyond. Journey maps surface the moments where your messaging needs to work hardest and where the wrong message loses the prospect entirely. Included in every engagement.

06

KPI Identification

Business goals and audience insights combined to identify the metrics that will matter most, the early indicators that tell you whether the strategy is working before the big numbers move. Full KPI definition follows competitive analysis and strategy development, but the seeds are planted here.

07

Findings Report

A structured document summarizing benchmarking findings, persona summaries, behavioral insights, and key recommendations. It's reviewed live with your team, agreed upon, and used as the foundation for the broader strategy. The scope of the report scales to the engagement.

08

Persona Deck

A standalone, presentation-ready persona document your team can use beyond the strategy engagement, in creative briefs, content planning, sales conversations, and product decisions. Included where scoped, and combined with the findings report where a single document makes more sense.

Our Work

What discovery & audience research work looks like

Research is only as useful as the clarity it produces. Here's a sample of the deliverables we build to be reviewed with your team and used long after the strategy engagement is complete.

The Process

How we run a discovery & audience research engagement

  1. 01

    Kickoff & Goal Alignment

A structured kickoff session with key stakeholders to confirm business objectives, define the scope of the research, and establish what success looks like before any data gets pulled. The right questions at this stage prevent the wrong answers later.

  2. 02

    Data Access & Collection

We request access to GA4, Search Console, and social analytics platforms where available, pulling data directly rather than working from static exports wherever possible. Client-provided data fills the gaps where direct access isn't available.

  3. 03

    Analytics & Site Review

Existing digital data analyzed for traffic patterns, content performance, conversion paths, and behavioral signals. High-value pages, top sources, and key drop-off points are documented and mapped against business objectives.

  4. 04

    Persona & Behavior Research

Secondary market research, analytics behavioral data, and organizational benchmarking synthesized into detailed audience personas and behavior maps. Each persona is grounded in evidence, not assumptions.

  5. 05

    Journey Mapping

Customer journeys mapped for each primary persona, charting the emotional and behavioral experience from first touchpoint through conversion and retention. Friction points and high-impact messaging moments identified.

  6. 06

    Findings Presentation & Handoff

Research findings compiled into the agreed deliverable format, whether that's a findings report, a persona deck, or both, and presented live with your team. Findings reviewed, questions answered, and priorities aligned before the engagement moves into competitive analysis and broader strategy development.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Discovery & Audience Research and Competitive Analysis?

Discovery & Audience Research focuses inward and on your audience: who they are, how they behave, what they need, and how they move through a decision journey. Competitive Analysis focuses outward, on how your competitors position themselves, what they're saying, and where the differentiation opportunities are. Both are part of a complete Digital Strategy engagement and inform each other. See Competitive Analysis.

Do you need access to our existing analytics?

Yes, where it's available. We request access to GA4, Search Console, and social analytics platforms directly so we can pull live data rather than work from static exports. Where direct access isn't possible, client-provided exports fill the gaps. The more data we can access, the more grounded the research findings are.

What if we don't have much existing data, we're a newer business?

Discovery is still valuable and still possible. We lean more heavily on organizational benchmarking, market research, and comparable audience data to build the picture. The persona and journey work is informed by what similar audiences look like rather than your specific historical data, and it still gives every downstream decision a human being to write toward.

What do we get at the end of a Discovery engagement?

A findings report, a persona deck, or both, depending on scope, reviewed live with your team before the engagement moves forward. The deliverable is agreed upon at the start of the project, not decided at the end. It then feeds directly into the broader strategy document.

Is customer journey mapping always included?

Yes. Journey mapping is included in every Discovery & Audience Research engagement. Understanding how your key personas move from first awareness through conversion is too important to scope out, since it's one of the most direct inputs into content strategy, channel selection, and messaging decisions downstream.

How does this feed into the rest of the Digital Strategy engagement?

Directly. The findings from Discovery & Audience Research become the foundation for Competitive Analysis, Content Strategy, and ultimately the full strategy document. KPIs identified during discovery are refined and formalized once competitive analysis is complete and business goals are mapped to a strategic framework. Nothing downstream gets built without this foundation.
